Description/notes on Brenda Stumpf's piece titled Upon:
Watercolor, charcoal and plaster on paper

Active until 1834, the Inquisition in Central and South America tortured and burned natives for not believing in the true faith. It has been written by Mayan scribes in Central America, " Before the coming of the Spaniards, there was no robbery or violence. The Spanish invasion was the beginning of tribute, the beginning of church dues, the beginning of strife." Catholic fathers burned Indian "witches", and it seems that an inquisitor had become a necessity of the missionary outfit.
